Happy Wife, Happy Life

This past Friday Chris and I got invited to go to a Marriage Live event with our friends, Troy and Caitlin. It was at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. Guest speaker Chip Dickens talked about “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” of communicating in relationships.

I came to the conclusion that Chris is always wrong. Just kidding! It is good to know that even strong marriages have conflicts. Living with someone 24/7 means there are going to be differing opinions and it is okay to disagree. It is also okay to acknowledge that the wife is always right. Is that too much to ask?!

Chip Dickens talked about emotions when couples argue. We learned that men “flood” emotions and women…well women do what women do…get emotional and their minds go a mile a minute. Chip explained “flooding” by saying that a guy’s mind completely freezes and they can’t even put a sentence together because of their flooding internal emotions. Women’s minds speed up and men’s minds slow down causing conflicts to erupt into something bigger than they have to be.
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." - Hebrews 10:24
He also gave us tips on rules about fighting, like where and when is an appropriate time to fight. Chip and his wife never fight before bed or in public. They both agreed that waiting until you are in a better state of mind and not in the public eye would make for a healthier fight.
After the seminar, Chris and I walked away feeling like it was a success; I was able to tell Chris that he wasn’t calm, cool, and collected during fights, and he was able to solidify the fact that my mind rages during an argument. We also learned that for every negative comment made toward your significant other there should be five positive comments or conversations in order to negate the negative comment and continue to have a healthy relationship.
Us and our friend, Troy!
All-in-all it was a great night full of fun, friends, and BBQ. Did I mention it was a western themed shindig? They had the tables decorated western-like and they served BBQ and peach cobbler. Doesn’t get more country than that!

Do you have any relationship advice?! Chris and I are still pretty new at this whole marriage thing, but I think we are doing a pretty good job for newbies :) He just sometimes forgets..."Happy wife, happy life. Happy wife, happy life."
